Ginkgo in Chendu

Ginkgo is the official tree for Chendu, China. Fall is the perfect time to see it. Here at the Zen Buddha hotel are two specimens. They are espaliered.

Landscape Architecture in The Forbidden City: Stairway of Stone

While visiting The Forbidden City I spotted this ‘stairway of stone.’ It’s carved from one single piece of marble. I’m told it weighs 250 tons and that 10,000 laborers brought it from southern China. They moved it during winter. To move it they put water down in front of it. After the water turned to ice, they would slide it across.
