The wisteria was fragrant and full at three of my clients’ beautiful properties in Sonoma today.

Day Trip for Specimin Trees for California Couture Landscape

Great trip to see Valley Crest Tree Company with my wonderful client today.

We were looking for some large specimen trees (Valley Oak, Arbutis, Olives, Magnolia Grandaflora cultivars) for the beautiful home she’s building in Sonoma.

Cement Pour – First Street West

Been super busy, haven’t been posting, had a great holiday, nice trip to Paris and Bordeaux, my phone got wet – don’t ask how – lost some pics I was going to post. Life got in the way. Here’s where we were today, redoing the front yard and vanity vineyard for wonderful clients who live in San Francisco. Last year, we put in a pool, hot tub, patio and pergola in the backyard and added some espalier fruit trees, roses … Now we are building an Ipe, country style fence in the front with a modern sliding gate. Steel Geisha is fabricating the gate. It will be a steel frame with Ipe horizontal panels to match the fence. We’ll add Ipe on top of the existing cement patio and put hog wire panels with vines on the side. We’re changing out the front door for a custom door with horizontal wood by Sonoma Door & Sash. We’re using Rocky Mountain Hardware for the door. We’re getting rid of the wireless doorbell that played “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” and wouldn’t stop. The light fixtures will be swapped out for modern, farm-style fixtures from Restoration Hardware in weathered zinc. The ugly lamppost will be remade to match . Today we were pouring cement for the driveway, which we are redoing. It will have pretty gravel and landscaping after the driveway. The color of the cement is Davis Cocoa.

Today was muddy

New construction in Larkspur. We are getting ready to put in retaining walls, leveling out the site for some Eco-lawn and native meadow for a two-story, modern house.

It’s always nice to get out of the office but it was a little wet out there. Got my Hunter Boots very muddy. Luckily, my silver boots were in the Prius.

Artist’s Sonoma Hideaway

This was a transformation of a mid-century mistake in olive green with white plastic windows. My cool, fun, clients, who also have a home in San Francisco, were very trusting and let me change the color of the house, even though they’d painted it four months prior. She is a graphic artist: He’s an engineer. After showing them pictures of black houses and houses with wooden horizontal screens via pinterest, they went for it. The olive tree was being smothered by an oak, so we moved the olive across the property. The job qualified for Sonoma’s Cash for Grass program, which includes a reimbursement for mulch and drip irrigation, as well as up to $500 for ones square footage of softscape in the area where there was previously lawn. Originally the front yard consisted of unhappy lawn and aging camillias.

Transplanting a Heritage Olive

This olive tree was the last tree standing in an old olive orchard. It was growing in the shade of a large oak tree. There was probably 20 years of leaf litter in the olive tree. We named the tree Olivia.

Here are some pictures of us moving Olivia and a nice note my client sent:

hi, i was laying on the stone wall beneath the olive tree just now, and i noticed there is a nice layer of moss on that gnarly old trunk.
I do believe we positioned it the way the tree wanted—because the moss side is facing due north…same as she was before we moved her… : )
